Yellow River
Trip report: May 2016
The Yellow River Designated Paddling Trail runs 54 miles through Santa Rosa and Okaloosa Counties with six access points. Suitable for kayak or canoe, the river is popular with campers. The upper portion goes through hardwood forest, with slightly swift currents and higher banks. Downstream, the river widens and more motorboat traffic will be encountered. We visited, mapped, and photographed several launches along the trail for a future paddling trip and presented here for those who may be interested. (Detailed map and photos below.)

Page Summary:
Water levels can fluctuate rapidly so be aware - especially when water is running high, paddling can be difficult or dangerous. Because this is a remote area, the most secure parking is at Rivers Edge RV Park. Below SR 90 much of the land on the south side of the river is in Eglin Air Force Base; while some facilities are available to the public, a base recreation permit is required. Camping is available in the Yellow River Wildlife Management Area and at Rivers Edge RV Park. Wildlife include song birds, alligators, turtles, and a variety of fish.
